Let’s Play and Learn: The Power of Games in MFL

Learning through play in MFL

In our modern foreign language (MFL) classrooms at BIS Hanoi, you’ll often hear laughter and see students having fun. This isn’t just playtime, it’s learning in action. We believe games are one of the most effective ways to teach and learn a new language. They make lessons more engaging and enjoyable for every student.

Learning a language is not just about memorising vocabulary. It’s about using that language to communicate in real situations. Games give students the chance to practise in a relaxed and natural setting, without the pressure of formal tests. When students enjoy what they’re doing, they stay focused and involved. This helps them remember new words and phrases more easily. A fun game creates a positive memory, which helps new information stick.

Imagine playing language bingo in Spanish or French, or racing through a digital quiz to match pictures with vocabulary. These activities are far more dynamic than simply writing words in a notebook.

More than just vocabulary

Games do more than help students remember words. They build important life skills. When students play, they think quickly, listen carefully, and work as a team. These are skills they will use far beyond the classroom.

A memory game helps students concentrate and recall vocabulary. A role-playing activity encourages them to solve problems together, using only the target language. These moments help them develop critical thinking while practising real communication.

Technology that supports learning

We also use educational technology to make games even more effective. Digital tools allow us to create fun activities for retrieval practice. This helps students recall and use what they’ve learned in a very active way.

Classic games like tic-tac-toe and mouse trap are adapted to include foreign language vocabulary and grammar. These interactive tools offer personalised challenges that help students practise without even realising they’re studying.

Speaking with confidence

Conversation games are a key part of our approach. Activities like speed dating, where students have short conversations with different classmates, help them practise speaking and listening in a low-pressure environment. If they make a mistake, they simply try again with the next person.

These games turn language learning into a social experience. Students speak with their friends, build confidence, and feel more comfortable using the language in real time.

A positive learning community

When students play together, they support each other and celebrate their progress. This creates a positive and encouraging classroom environment. We are proud of the joy our students find in MFL lessons and the progress they are making.

Every day, we see how games help students speak new languages and grow into confident, well-rounded individuals. It’s inspiring to watch them learn and thrive while having fun at BIS Hanoi.
