Simon Higham
Principal
Simon was appointed BIS Principal in 2025 and is an experienced educator and educational leader. He has a proven track record of outstanding educational leadership and thrives upon developing effective and efficient school culture that leads to a sense of genuine belonging across the community.

Simon Higham

Prior to this role, Simon was Principal at our sister NAE school, BVIS HCMC for 7 years. Other previous posts include Head Teacher of BIS HCMC at the An Phu Primary Campus and Head Teacher of BIS HCMC at the Junior Campus. He has worked as a Head of Primary at Jerudong International School, Brunei and also as a Deputy Head Teacher in the UK. He has an honours degree from The University of Warwick (UK) in History with Education, holds the National Professional Qualification for Headship and is a qualified level 3 school inspector for BSO (British School’s Overseas). Simon has a proven track record of outstanding educational leadership across diverse educational settings. He is passionate about effective and efficient school cultures to ensure that all students and staff develop a genuine sense of belonging within the school community.

 

In his spare time, Simon loves to watch his beloved Manchester United, collect Japanese vintage treasures and eat a diversity of foods from across the world.

Mary Mcaloon
Headteacher, Early Years and Infant Campus (EY&I)

Mary is an experienced practitioner with over 20 years of teaching and leadership experience in schools across the UK and Asia. An advocate for holistic education, Mary leads to provide opportunity and success for all.

Mary Mcaloon

Mary rejoined BIS HCMC in August 2025 as Primary Headteacher following her Headship of five years at our sister school, British Vietnamese International School, HCMC.  Mary returned to BIS HCMC having been the Primary Deputy Headteacher of the Tu Xuong and Early Years & Infant Campuses from 2015 to 2020.  Mary believes the purpose of education is to enable every individual to confidently access, develop and enjoy their talents both in the core and creative areas of the curriculum.  Mary believes that every student deserves recognition and celebration for their efforts and achievements as they learn and develop through their academic journey. 

Above all, as Primary Headteacher, Mary ensures every student finds their “voice”.  With this, Mary believes every young person has a place in the world, they simply need to be given opportunities and feel fulfilment, and as a result, they will find what makes them thrive in the ever-evolving future that educators are preparing them for.

In addition to her passion for education, Mary is a sports enthusiast and will always be training for her upcoming triathlon race.  She also enjoys playing golf with her husband, James, and after many years of recreational play, has recently achieved her first official EGU (English Golf Union) playing handicap.

Ian Battersby
Headteacher, Junior Campus
Ian joined us in 2011 having previously held teaching and leadership positions in schools across Europe and Africa. With a passion for education, Ian’s goal is to imbue our youngest children with a lifelong love of learning, sparking their imaginations and encouraging them to explore, discover, and create.

Ian Battersby

Having qualified in 1990, Ian spent three years teaching in England before an eight-year stint in international schools in Sudan and Turkey. After returning to the UK, Ian took on a management position with responsibility for ICT at Ecclesall Junior School in Sheffield. He subsequently joined Greenhill Primary School, also in Sheffield, as Deputy Head Teacher in 2007.

Ian is married with three children and enjoys both watching and taking part in a variety of sports, particularly running, triathlons, and golf. He loves learning and relishes the opportunities that living and working in Vietnam offer.

Stephen Kay
Headteacher, Secondary Campus
Stephen joined BIS HCMC in August 2023 having previously worked as the Head of Secondary at the International School Brunei, and at schools in the UK and Argentina. Stephen values every learner as an individual, seeking to understand their strengths, support their future aspirations and celebrate their successes.

Stephen Kay

Stephen joined BIS HCMC in August 2023 as the Head of the Secondary Campus having previously worked as the Head of Secondary at the International School Brunei. British by birth and raised in New Zealand, Stephen completed his BSc in Auckland and his teaching diploma in Christchurch, where he met his Canadian wife, Tara. Their international teaching adventures have taken them to the UK, Argentina, Brunei and now to Vietnam. Along the way, Stephen completed his MEd and has two children, one born in England and one in Argentina. 

Stephen appreciates how excellent education can motivate and inspire young people and how international schools provide their communities with a myriad of opportunities to celebrate cultural diversity and develop globally minded, caring young people.  

With his international perspective, Stephen sometimes considers himself an original third culture child and uses his own life experiences to encourage all students to have a strong sense of self-identity, whilst also being open minded and engaged with the culture of their host country. 

In his spare time, Stephen enjoys the outdoors – walking, hiking, swimming and boating. A closet reader, Stephen is somewhat of a secret Pratchett fan.

Louise Bishop
Director of Admissions and Marketing
Louise joined BIS HCMC in January 2021, having lived in Ho Chi Minh City for more than 10 years. Passionate about the opportunities offered by both our school and the city, Louise leads the team of friendly faces you’ll meet when you first get in touch with us.

Louise Bishop

Originally from Derbyshire in the UK, Louise gained a BSc Honours degree in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Newcastle. After graduating, Louise worked at the British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research UK, leading marketing and communication teams and delivering high profile public health education campaigns both a local and national level in the UK.  Louise has now lived in Vietnam for 12 years, firstly working at Family Medical Practice managing a variety of business and operational functions across a number of clinics.  Louise has now worked at BIS HCMC for 2 years leading an expert team across admissions, marketing, communications, graphic design and events.

Louise also sits on the executive board of the British Chamber of Commerce (BritCham) in Vietnam and is firmly embedded in our city’s expat community, having worked with many organisations, businesses, and people. She’s an expert at helping families navigate the challenges of settling into a new life overseas, too. At every stage of the admissions process, Louise can provide the information and guidance you need.

Louise loves to spend time with her two daughters and enjoys travelling to new places across Vietnam and Asia. In her spare time, she enjoys triathlon training and is actively involved in many sporting groups. Louise also enjoys climbing, cycling, and music.

Dang Bich Van
Business Director
Ms Van has more than 20 years’ experience in high-level business and management roles across the globe. She joined BIS HCMC in 2017 and has played a pivotal role in creating the best possible environment for our students and staff to thrive.

Ms Van

After studying in both the United States and Vietnam, Ms Van worked for two decades in a variety of high-level corporate roles. These included leadership positions in luxury hospitality companies, directorships at Vietnamese businesses, and operations management at Tiffany & Co in America. This has given Ms Van a wealth of practical financial, marketing, communications, and team management experience.

Since joining us in 2017, Ms Van has made an enormous contribution to our school, creating a thriving environment for our whole community.

Away from school, Ms Van enjoys cooking, baking, and spending time with her family.

Sue Mulholland

Sue joined BIS HCMC in August 2023 as Deputy Headteacher, Enrichment – Whole School, having previously been Director of Inclusion and Free Learning at Dulwich College, London. Sue teaches Art and Art History, and is an academic and pastoral leader with a track record for developing educational partnerships.

She is a Chairperson for Gua Africa and a consultant for Windle International, working with survivors of war across East Africa. From early in her career Sue recognised the role creativity has in breaking down barriers, encountering pupils coming from challenging backgrounds, including those fleeing conflict zones. She continues to develop her praxis research in ‘Creative Wellbeing’ through her work in schools and refugee camps and believes every child can be nurtured to become lifelong curious learners.

Sue practices yoga and is a keen runner, this is often when she has her best ideas.

Sarah Curran
Deputy Headteacher, Early Years and Infant Campus
Sarah started teaching in 1995, gaining her National Professional Qualification for Headship in 2009. Sarah is passionate about early years education and helps each child to develop as a confident, creative, and imaginative learner.

Sarah Curran

Sarah started teaching in 1995, gaining her NPQH in 2009. She taught in inner-city schools in London and Bristol, as well as village schools in Norfolk and Wales, before becoming Head Teacher of Rhigos Primary School in 2010. She also spent two years lecturing on ICT in education, and is enthusiastic about the use of modern technology to enhance learning. Sarah is passionate about early years education and helps our students to become confident, creative, and imaginative learners. 

Away from school, Sarah enjoys spending time with her husband and daughter. She also likes sewing, travel, and geocaching.

Chris McKelvie
Deputy Headteacher, Junior Campus

Chris has a wealth of teaching and leadership experience from the UK, Middle East, and across Asia. Passionate about developing our students' skills both in and beyond the classroom, Chris helps our primary children to become inquisitive global citizens.

Chris McKelvie

Chris joined us from the Taipei European School, where he was a Year Group Leader and Key Stage 2 teacher.

His teaching career began in a London school, where he developed a passion for primary education. Chris subsequently spent nine years teaching PE in international schools in Kuwait, where he was also Head of Department, before moving to the British International School of Shanghai.

Chris' interests include travel, eating out in HCMC, and coaching our students on our sport enrichment programme. He has a wife, Nicole, who also teaches at BIS HCMC, as well as two children at the school.

Olly Dowden
Assistant Headteacher, Early Years and Infant Campus

Olly qualified as a teacher in the UK in 2011 before moving to Ho Chi Minh in 2013 to work in an international school. He arrived at BIS HCMC in 2020. He has held a variety of responsibilities in these schools including subject leadership, Key Stage leadership, and Curriculum and Assessment leadership. Olly is passionate about teaching and learning and enjoys collaborating with teachers to innovate using research informed practices in the classroom.

Olly Dowden

Olly began his teaching journey in London, England, before moving to Vietnam in 2013 to teach at Renaissance International School in Ho Chi Minh City, where he held a variety of roles, including Key Stage 2 Leader. Since joining BIS HCMC in 2020, he has enjoyed positions as a Class Teacher, Subject Leader, and Curriculum & Assessment Leader.

Guided by the BIS HCMC core values of kindness, respect, and collaboration, Olly is excited to support the school’s diverse community in his role as Assistant Headteacher of Early Years & Infant. He believes BIS HCMC is a very special place, home to motivated and passionate learners, caring families, and dedicated staff who are themselves lifelong learners. Amelia joined us in August 2023 having previously taught and led in schools across the UK and Kuala Lumpur. A life-long learner, Amelia is currently completing her National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH). She loves to read and is passionate about sharing her joy of reading with others.

Amelia Kirby
Amelia joined BIS HCMC in 2023 as Primary Assistant Head Teacher, having previously taught and led in schools across the UK and in Kuala Lumpur. She joined TeachFirst straight after her law degree, having discovered the joy of teaching by volunteering in local schools. Initially she thought she would only teach for a couple of years but quickly realised it was the best job in the world and far more exciting than law. 14 year later she is still teaching, having trained as SENDCo and moved into leadership. A life-long learner, she is currently completing her NPQH.

As a child of teachers, Amelia grew up living in Buenos Aires and Toulouse and is energised and excited by discovering new cultures, languages and especially food with her family. She is very happy when near water and will be found in the swimming pool or sea wherever possible.

Gareth Wills
Deputy Headteacher - Welfare and Guidance, Secondary Campus

Gareth has more than 15 years' experience in pastoral care and wellbeing, as well as being a passionate history and humanities teacher. Having joined us in 2020, Gareth is focused on creating wellbeing programmes that nurture our students' growth, maximise their academic performance, and enable them to flourish.

Gareth Wills

Gareth joined us in 2020, having previously taught at an international school in Hong Kong.

With more than 15 years of experience in pastoral care and wellbeing, Gareth has led the development of many highly successful wellbeing programmes. In recent years, Gareth has enhanced his expertise in this area through training with the University of Liverpool. Gareth is also a highly experienced and passionate history and humanities teacher. 

As a senior leader, Gareth is focused on providing carefully designed wellbeing programmes that equip our students with the correct tools, nurture their development, maximise their academic performance, and enable them to flourish.

Outside of school, Gareth is married with two children, one of whom is part of the BIS HCMC community. Gareth enjoys reading, coaching rugby, and writing children’s books.

Matthew Lambert
Deputy Headteacher - Curriculum and Learning, Secondary Campus
Prior to joining us in 2015, Matthew had taught for three years in the UK before becoming Head of Physics at Markham College in Lima, Peru. Matthew is passionate about professional development, supporting both our teachers and staff to learn, grow, and be their best.

Matthew Lambert
Matthew joined us in August 2015. Prior to this, Matthew taught for three years in the UK before becoming Head of Physics at Markham College in Lima, Peru. He subsequently assumed the role of Teaching and Learning Coordinator at Markham, where he led teachers’ professional development through the introduction of Professional Learning Communities.

Matthew's interests include astronomy, travelling, and live music. He lives with his wife, Fiorella and two children, Rodrigo and Lilo.

Morgan Whitfield
Assistant Headteacher - Teaching and Learning, Secondary Campus

Morgan joined BIS HCMC in August 2024 having previously gained extensive teaching and leadership experience in the UK and British Curriculum schools in the UAE. Morgan supports our older students through their IB Diploma ensuring they thrive academically, personally and socially.

Morgan Whitfield

Morgan joined BIS HCMC in August 2024 having previously gained extensive teaching and leadership experience across 15 years in the UK and British Curriculum schools in the UAE. 

Originally from Canada, Morgan gained a BA (Hons) in International Development from the University of Guelph, where she was a President’s Scholar and then a BA (Hons) in Education from Queen’s University.  Morgan also holds a National Professional Qualification for Senior Leadership (NPQSL).  Her international teaching career began in the UK with the last 12 years being in British based curriculum schools in Abu Dhabi, where she has taken on such roles as Director of Teaching and Learning, Head of Sixth Form, Head of Humanities and Head of Scholars.  

Morgan is a passionate advocate for equity in education. Her book “Gifted? The Shift to Enrichment, Challenge and Equity” was published in early 2024. She frequently presents to fellow teachers at conferences and hosts a podcast on Teachers Talk Radio. Morgan comes from a family of dynamic educators and is happy to continue the tradition.  

Morgan has three little children who keep her busy! She enjoys reading in any quiet moments and playing board games with anyone who puts up with her overly competitive spirit. She is a typical geographer who loves to travel.

Danielle Fountain
Assistant Headteacher - Teaching and Learning, Secondary Campus

Danielle is delighted to become Assistant Headteacher of Teaching & Learning at BIS HCMC. Since joining in 2016, she has worked with talented colleagues and inspiring students, and as both a teacher and parent, feels deeply connected to the school’s mission. She aims to nurture curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning, preparing students to make a positive impact in the world.

Danielle Fountain

Since joining BIS in 2016, Danielle has brought a wealth of expertise and passion to the school, drawing on over 16 years of teaching and educational leadership experience in both the UK and here at BIS HCMC.

An Oxford University graduate in Biological Sciences, Danielle began her career teaching in Honduras before broadening her perspective as a Sustainability Strategy Consultant in London. Her commitment to education led her to complete a PGCE, a Master’s in Educational Leadership, and the National Professional Qualification in Senior Leadership (NPQSL).

Her career has encompassed roles as a teacher and leader in Science departments, Assistant Principal in London, and—at BIS—Head of Biology, IBDP Coordinator, and now Assistant Headteacher of Teaching & Learning. Across every role, she has championed high-quality teaching, intellectual curiosity, creativity, and a love of learning—ensuring that BIS students leave not only academically prepared, but also with the confidence, international-mindedness, and resilience to thrive at university and beyond.

As a BIS parent, Danielle views the school through both professional and personal lenses. Her two children are thriving here, sharing her enthusiasm for the school’s values and opportunities. Outside the classroom, she can often be found outdoors—hiking, cycling, or diving with her family—always eager to explore, discover, and learn.

TEACHER-LED TECHNOLOGY

TECHNOLOGY THAT TRANSFORMS LEARNING

AT BIS HCMC, our innovative use of technology - including digital design tools, 3D printers, robotics, laser-cutting equipment, interactive whiteboards and iPads - heightens student engagement, improving and accelerating how and what they learn. Our students are digital natives, and we nurture their skills from an early age. This includes teaching them to safely navigate the online world through our Bring Your Own Device initiative. 

There are so many opportunities for your child to engage in truly 21st century learning. The International VEX Robotics Championships give our students the opportunity to hone and demonstrate their coding skills, while our Nam Phong Racing team have represented Vietnam at the Formula 1 in Schools World Finals.
